April last year seems to be almost an eternity away. Here we are, sitting in our own little spots under lock down and we can only think where we were last year.

On this day last year Janey and I had just arrived in Mauritius where the next day we would attend the wedding on the beach of our son, Johno, and Julie Christie. There we were, without shoes, listening to a preacher they got from somewhere, to them taking their vows – with Hunter, only two and a half, and Halle, about seven months looking on.

The next day Janey celebrated her birthday and it was a good reason for another celebration, along with Lynette Botha, actually Lynette Botha, wife of Pieter Moorreesburg Botha (as we called him).

With us were Sue, our daughter, and her husband Dean and our little granddaughter, Isla Jane.

Tomorrow morning we will watch John and Jules do their on-line fitness session which now has a global audience at 07:45 in the morning – Cape Town time – and then open a bottle of bubbly to celebrate with them. We will be here at Riverside – and they will be at their home in Cape Town. Sue, Dean and Isla is staying in our other house here at Stilbaai – barely 5 kilometres away – but due to the lock down we cannot visit them. They were due to fly out to the UK this week to settle at Walton-on-Thames and start new careers there.

So on Sunday – at three different places – our family will open the bubbly again – this time to celebrate Janey’s birthday. This time we will also call the Morreesburg crowd and hope that Pieter will be ready with his champers to toast Lynette too!

What a mess! We will meet again once this is all over – and then we will celebrate again. Now we celebrate with the memories of last year.
